Our Philosophy
Our Philosophy
Nira Caledonia
Welcome to Nira Caledonia, a beautiful boutique hotel that is devoted to indulging all of life's pleasures.
Located just one stone away from the lovely town of Stockbridge, in New Town, the heart of Edinburgh and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this elegant Georgian townhouse is the perfect base for exploring a city steeped in history yet alive with modern, cosmopolitan culture. Step into the history at Nira Caledonia: once home to Scottish advocate, literary critic, and author John Wilson of Ellera (the writer most frequently identified with the pseudonym Christopher North of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine), it now opens its doors for you.
Due to the historical importance of the building, you won't find modern conveniences such as a Lift or Air Conditioning that can put in danger the delicate structure. However, each room is equipped with modern treats: from a large flat TV screen to dock stations for charging your phones or even our very own Nira Caledonia app that gives you the latest local news or lets you communicate with our concierge wherever you are.

Shanti Hospitality
Shanti Hospitality Group is a hotel and leisure company focused on building exceptional assets and brands. We strive to make a positive impact in everything we do. Historically, at Shanti Hospitality, this was achieved by building exceptional assets and brands.
Shanti Experiences
At Shanti Hospitality, we make use of our expertise and thorough local knowledge to deliver unforgettable memories to our guests. While we all enjoy possessing items, the gratification this brings is shortlived, unlike the enduring contentment that happy memories bring. This is due to hedonic adaptation. It is our memories alone which allow us to relive the joy, excitement and emotion of a moment, even long after it has passed.Shanti Wellness
Shanti Wellness aims to refresh and rejuvenate the mind, body and soul, thus laying the foundations for a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. After all, a healthy state of being is essential in order to be able to deliver exceptional moments, as well as to enjoy them to the fullest.Shanti Seva
In Hindi, the word ‘Seva’ means to serve selflessly. Shanti Seva is the soul of Shanti Hospitality, and at the heart of everything we do. This spirit of selfless service is deeply instilled in our culture, and extends equally to our guests, colleagues, and members of our local communities. Our Philosophy
THE SPIRIT OF NIRA IS BORN OUT OF OUR BELIEF THAT TODAY’S DISCERNING GUESTS SEEK A MORE AUTHENTIC, EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE.
Nira conjures a modern idiom of luxury, born from the pursuit of excellence and a belief that perfection is only the foundation that we build on. To us, pleasure is not a state of being; it is the primordial purpose of the soul. We believe that exquisite travel and dining experiences are no longer dependant on superficial glamour and regimented operating procedures. There is a place for eclectic design and ever-so-subtle eroticism.
Increasingly, guests are looking for a sense of sincerity and integrity, with service that comes straight from the heart. To us, true hospitality is about ‘your way’, a touch of our hand and the passion that binds the two. It is about the creation of hedonistic havens, where all manner of whims and desires are indulged.
We favour a natural approach to hospitality, based on understanding, warm-heartedness and the occasional need for a place of sanctuary. Where abundant stimulation and relentless distraction have become intrinsic to many lives, the true luxury we offer is time and space. This more sensitive attitude to running hotels, resorts and restaurants stems from our spiritual and compassionate roots, born out of Asia.

The History of Nira Caledonia
History of Nira Caledonia
A Little History of the Townhouse & Blackwood’s Magazine
Being the former home of literary figure John Wilson, Nira Caledonia was built in 1823 by renowned Scottish architect William Playfair in the heart of Edinburgh. John Wilson was a well-known philosopher, essayist, wit, and leading writer for Blackwood's Magazine. Using the pseudonym Christopher North, with flowing hair and a flamboyant personality, he was regarded as “the greatest magazine writer of his time” and lived life to the fullest. Likewise, these beautiful Georgian Townhouses stick to their heritage by offering embellished interiors in all 27 rooms that whisper luxury by paying homage to traditional Scottish architecture, such as detailed cornices, traditional sash windows, wooden flooring, spiral staircases and embossed tartan patterns. The hotel has no lift or air-conditioning to preserve these grade-A Georgian townhouses' delicate structure and historical heritage.
A portrait of John Wilson by Thomas Duncan is exhibited at The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1 Queen Street.

Blackwood’s MagazineFounded in 1817 as the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine, Blackwood's Magazine became a spirited rival to the Whig-supporting Edinburgh Review. Renamed Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, it adopted the moniker "Maga." Known for its combative style, it featured influential writers like John Wilson, John Gibson Lockhart, and William Maginn. Despite its conservative stance, it published works by romantic radicals like Shelley and Coleridge. The magazine's controversial nature led to a fatal duel in 1821. Over time, its popularity waned, but it left a lasting impact on Victorian literature, influencing Dickens, the Brontës, and Poe. Finally ceasing in 1980, it boasts contributors like Eliot, Conrad, and Hogg.

Historical copies of Blackwood’s Magazine can be read online here.

Beaches around Edinburgh
Beaches around Edinburgh
There are some stunning beaches around Edinburgh (I know the sun might not always be shining, but these beaches can still be enjoyed all year round and are all wonderful scenery!)
Here are some of our favourite beaches all within a 1 hour drive from Edinburgh – there is parking available at each of these locations:
Portobello Beach
This is the closest beach to Edinburgh, and is only a 15-minute drive from the city centre. You can enjoy a walk along the 2-mile-long stretch of sand or the promenade. If the weather turns, there are also lots of local cafes, restaurants, and shops nearby.Yellowcraig Beach
Yellowcraigs Beach in North Berwick is one of the best beaches in the UK. The long stretch of sand, which offers stunning views across the dunes and through the woods, is a 45 minute drive from Edinburgh. This spot is perfect for a swim, or for local bird-watching.
Aberlady Bay
Aberlady Bay is situated in a charming East Lothian village, so there are plenty of cafes and shops to enjoy before or after your visit to the beach. There is much to explore at this spot, including sand dunes, salt marshes, and mudflats. It makes a great day trip from Edinburgh, as it is only a half an hour drive from the city centre.Gullane
Gullane, a gorgeous sandy beach which is a 40 minute drive from Edinburgh, is a beautiful beach (I used to love it here as a kid!) It is also an excellent location for sunbathing, walking, picnics, windsurfing and canoeing. -
Scottish Castles
Scottish Castles
Castles are an integral part of Scotland’s history. While impressive, Edinburgh Castle is not the only castle in Scotland - you can be sure that when visiting Scotland you are never far away from a castle. Here is a list of some of the best castles in Scotland (with Edinburgh obviously at the top!).
Edinburgh Castle
Built on the plug of an extinct volcano, Edinburgh Castle has outstanding views of the Capital city. This spot has been a fortress since at least the Iron Age, and has been central to countless key moments in Scotland's history, from the Wars of Independence to the Jacobite Uprising. It also serves as the backdrop for the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Stirling Castle
Sitting strategically on Castle Hill, part of a 350 million-year-old rock formation, the castle has seen at least eight sieges - including an unsuccessful one by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Stirling Castle was the favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens.
Eilean Donan Castle
Eilean Donan has to be one of the most photographed castles in the world. Boasting a perfect picture-postcard setting on an island at the entrance of Loch Duich, Eilean Donan is steeped in Jacobite lore. Among the rare artefacts on display is a sword said to have been wielded at Culloden. The castle has featured in a number of Hollywood films, including Highlander, The World is Not Enough, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Culzean Castle
Culzean Castle stands on a clifftop that gazes out over the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran. Built in the 18th Century, it was home to the chief of Clan Kennedy. Now it is run by the National Trust for Scotland and Its beautiful architecture, gardens, and beach attract tourists from far and wide.
Extra Castles (all worth a visit)
Tantallan CastleCraigmillar Castle
Blackness Castle
Dirleton Castle
Each of these castles tells their own story, and are all worth visiting if you have the time.

Things to do with Children in Edinburgh
Things to do with Children in Edinburgh
Here in Edinburgh, we have many great options for entertaining children. Edinburgh is fantastic all year and in Winter the medieval architecture and Edinburgh Castle look even more magical with the snow. However, you may need a few indoor options for entertaining the kids if the weather is wet (it often is unfortunately).
Below is some of our recommendations for the best things to do in Edinburgh with children:
Edinburgh Castle
Top of my list has to be Edinburgh’s Castle. Dating back over 1,000 years and looking over the city from its rocky point. Most importantly, highlights include the Scottish Crown Jewels and the medieval Mons Meg Canon which is fired at 1pm each day (Monday to Saturday). In addition, there are a wide range of special events throughout the year too.Camera Obscura and World of Illusions
It is certainly one of the best kids activities in Edinburgh. Today there are five floors of interactive optical illusions, where technology and magic meet. For example, kids will love the fact they can shrink themselves like Alice in Wonderland or get lost in the Mirror Maze. After that, they can climb up to the rooftop terrace for amazing 360 degree views. They will be able to see The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and the Firth of Forth.
National Museum of Scotland
A great museum offering a mix of ancient history and cutting edge technology all tailored with children in mind. Its guided tours, workshops and themed exhibitions, encourage learning by doing, so it’s guaranteed to spark their imagination. Meet dinosaurs in the Natural World, robots in Science and Technology and mummies in Ancient Egypt! – I particularly loved going here when I was a child!Chocolatarium Tour (tasting included) – tour not suitable for children under 6 years old
The Chocolatarium is one of those experiences that you will remember for a long time. This tour of the World of Chocolate is a great introduction for families keen to learn about history, fun facts and of course taste different chocolates.
The tour lasts about 90min and has received very positive reviews in the past months. A great immersive activity to do with young explorers who are open to learn about their favourite chocolate bars. Pre-booking the tour is highly recommended.
Royal Yacht Britannia
Frequently voted Scotland’s Best Visitor Attraction. Her Majesty The Queen’s official yacht for over 40 years, this floating palace is steeped in history. The kids will love hearing the tales of life at sea, and getting involved in fun activities like treasure hunts. You can also book a children’s tour in advance.Edinburgh Dungeons
This is one older kids are sure to love, and any adults who like a bit of fun and gore! Aimed at ages 8 and over, this underground visitor attraction brings the city’s darkest history to life. Listen to ghostly tales by costumed characters as you make your way through the theatrical sets.I know can be difficult to keep the kids entertained, so I hope you find this list useful!

Day Trips from Edinburgh
Day Trips from Edinburgh
Here is a selection of our favourite day trips from Edinburgh that are all within 2 hours by Train.
North Berwick (journey: 30 minutes)
The Coastal Trail from Edinburgh is a really lovely cycle and passes many fantastic beaches. The gorgeous seaside town of North Berwick is just over half an hour from Edinburgh City Centre by Train and provides the perfect place to relax, with quaint shops, cafes, galleries and a pristine beach. If you're feeling energetic, climb to the top of the conical North Berwick Law for spectacular views over the coast. You'll also be able to see across to Edinburgh and the Pentlands on a clear day. The town's award-winning gardens are also lovely for a more relaxing stroll. North Berwick is the perfect day out for nature lovers and you can enjoy an interactive wildlife adventure at the Scottish Seabird Centre, which also has a nice cafe.
Stirling (journey: 50 minutes)
Located in central Scotland and known as the gateway to the Highlands, Stirling is the perfect old town to explore Scotland’s rich history. The town is relatively compact and easy to walk around and there are some key attractions you can easily visit on a day-trip from Edinburgh. A must-see is the striking Stirling Castle, steeped in medieval history and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. And also the National Wallace Monument, which commemorates William Wallace.Loch Lomond – (journey: 2 hours with a change at Glasgow Queen Street Station)
Loch Lomond is the largest body of fresh water in Scotland. The nearest Train Station is Balloch where it's only a short walk to catch a cruise on the loch or wander through Balloch Castle Country Park. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park features plenty of lochs, beautiful hills, forests and stunning views if you’re feeling adventurous.Aberdour and Fife Coastal Trail (journey: 30 minutes)
Aberdour is a delightful coastal town and a great place to enjoy a section of the stunning Fife Coastal Trail. From the train station, walk along Aberdour High Street and turn left down Shore Road. Follow the road to the left until you reach the harbour and then take the path behind the quay gallery along the harbour. Head up the path over Hawkcraig cliffs and through woodlands to Starley Burn. You’ll pass lovely waterfalls, distinctive due to the lime deposits left by the falling water. Here you can either turn back to Aberdour or continue following the path to Burntisland where you can get the train back to Edinburgh.St Andrews (journey: 50 minute train to Leuchars, 12 minute bus to St Andrews)
Sadly there’s no direct Train to St Andrews, but the journey is no problem. Simply take a train to Leuchars and the bus connections from Leuchars train station to St. Andrews are frequent and quick. Known as the home of golf, St Andrews is an iconic place to enjoy Scotland's national sport. There are plenty of courses to choose from, including the famous Old Course at St Andrews and you can find out more about the sport at the British Golf Museum. You don't have to be a golf fan though to enjoy this seaside retreat. You can explore the remains of St Andrews Cathedral, Scotland’s largest and most magnificent medieval church. Climb to the top and be rewarded with fantastic views of St Andrews and Fife.
Glasgow (journey: 50 minutes)
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and is just a 50-minute train ride from Edinburgh so it’s easy to do a day-trip to enjoy its shopping and attractions. One of the nicest parts of Glasgow to wander around is the West End, which is easily accessed on the subway. Take the Subway to Kelvinhall subway station to pay a visit to the majestic Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum where you can see one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world, a vast natural history collection and impressive artworks.I hope you find this useful and if it inspires a trip or two, then fantastic!

Hearts home ground is Tynecastle Park - McLeod St, Edinburgh EH11 2NL - ????️ Google map

Harry Potter
Harry Potter

Edinburgh has a deep connection with the wizarding world of Harry Potter and there are several Harry Potter sites in Edinburgh that you can visit. It was the inspiration of J.K. Rowling and the location when she wrote the Harry Potter books.
Harry Potter-related things to do in Edinburgh:
1. Visit Victoria Street
A much-loved street in Edinburgh also happens to have Harry Potter ties. Victoria Street is a curving, cobbled street in Edinburgh's Old Town that connects George IV Bridge and Grassmarket.
While you're on Victoria Street, you can pop into some magic- and Harry Potter-themed shops like Museum Context and The Great Wizard. These shops are filled with everything from Harry Potter wands to wizard-y artwork, and are fun to explore.
2. Wander through Greyfriars Kirkyard
The cemetery, connected to the 17th-century Greyfriars Kirk, has graves dating back to the 1600s – and has some spots of interest to Potterheads, too.
Wander through Greyfriars Kirkyard (especially some of the gravestones along the remnants of the old Flodden Wall), and you may spy some very familiar names. The most famous gravestone is probably that of Thomas Riddell, followed by graves for William McGonagall (a famously bad Scottish poet), Elizabeth Moodie, and Daniel Scrymgeour.
3. See J.K. Rowling’s handprints
In 2008, JK Rowling* was awarded the Edinburgh Award, and had her handprints cast in front of The City Chambers. Stop by for a visit and quick photo while you're on the Royal Mile.

4. Enjoy a Harry Potter themed Afternoon Tea
A Harry Potter-themed Afternoon Tea is at The Cauldron on Frederick St in the New Town. They offer a magical wizard-themed afternoon tea that's suitable for all ages!
During this immersive experience, you'll brew your own potions (teas), solve puzzle boxes, and use wands to discover things about your tea stands, all while you enjoy a full afternoon tea spread. This experience is magic-themed, but not directly Harry Potter-themed – probably for copyright reasons. But it's still a lot of fun!
Harry Potter ToursYou can see most of the above sites on a Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh. The most famous tour is the Potter Trail, a free walking tour that runs daily. This tour can get very busy, though, so keep that in mind. Another fun option is -
JK Rowling’s Edinburgh and the Writing of Harry Potter – 4 hours - focuses on JK Rowling's Edinburgh (it's long, though at 4 hours).Enjoy exploring!

Golf around Edinburgh
Golf around Edinburgh
If Golf is your thing then there are few better places on earth with so many outstanding golf courses packed into such a small area than Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Here is a list of some of the best courses across the Edinburgh and the surrounding area:
Muirfield
Par 71, Yards 7,245
Home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield is often hailed as “the finest links we have”! It has hosted 16 Opens and is an absolutely world-class course. Legends of the game have lifted the Claret Jug in front of the clubhouse, including Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus If you can get a game here, then you absolutely must make the journey to play it. It’s truly world class.
Gullane
Par 71, Yards 6,873 (Course No. 1)
Gullane would be the outstanding venue in just about any other region in the world. However, Muirfield is at the other end of the street. With not one but three top-quality courses, Gullane is an incredible place to play golf, affording stunning views over the Firth of Forth towards Fife and back up the coast towards Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh. The quality of the golf courses is right up there too, with No.1 hosting the Scottish Open twice in the last decade. If you can, make a day of it and play two or even three of the courses in the same day.
North Berwick
Par 71, Yards 6,551
Only St Andrews has a golf club which has played continuously over the same course for a longer period than North Berwick. Situated at the West Links in the shadow of Berwick Law since 1832, and like Gullane, would be held in higher esteem were it not neighboured by 20 other incredible courses. So good is it that PGA Tour star Max Homa headed out for 18 holes between rounds at the Scottish Open in 2022. It’s hosted Final Qualifying for the Open, as well as the men’s and women’s Amateur Championships.
The Renaissance
Par 71, Yards 7,303
Host to the Scottish Open, Renaissance is a modern links course that takes the best of modern engineering and the best of Scottish links layouts, combining them for a superb experience. The club opened in April 2008 and has since built up a reputation as one of the best in an area packed with unbelievable golf. If you get the chance to play here, you’ll be treated like royalty, with some of the most luxurious facilities in the country. The highlight comes at the 13th, where you tee off beside the Firth of Forth and play along the coast.
Edinburgh Leisure
Six courses!
If you’re looking for a course that’s going to be affordable, while still providing you with a great day out, Edinburgh Leisure have you covered. Portobello, Silverknowes, Craigentinny, Carricknowe, Braid Hills and the Wee Braids are all Council funded courses and are all ideal for a day out. Braid Hills is by far and away the best, and most challenging, and offers sublime views across Edinburgh and beyond (it is worth a walk just for the views!) Braid Hills also features a driving range for with shop and café.
I do hope you are able to enjoy a round or two at these or any other Golf Course in Edinburgh and the surroundings.

Christmas and New Year in Edinburgh
Christmas and New Year in Edinburgh
There is always a fabulous atmosphere in Edinburgh over Christmas and New Year with many exciting events taking place!
Below is information regarding 2025.
2026 information will be similar and updated nearer to the time.
Here are a selection of our top picks:
Castle of Light
Discover the iconic site after-dark and enjoy unmissable immersive displays, interactive installations, music and wonder.

East Princes Street Gardens Christmas Market
East Princes Street Gardens Christmas Market is there for the whole duration of Edinburgh’s Christmas 2024, and is the traditional Edinburgh Christmas Market with around 80 stalls offering local and international handmade gifts, bespoke products, tasty treats and hot and cold drinks (bring on the mulled wine!). The market is also welcoming the Big Wheel, Scotland’s largest Ferris wheel at 46m tall which offers market-goers a special perspective of the city.
George Street West & Castle Street
George Street will be home to the spectacular Edinburgh’s Christmas Ice Rink, a vital part of any Christmas visit. This year’s rink will be be undercover, allowing visitors to enjoy the majestic Georgian skyline of Edinburgh’s New Town from the ice. Once you've skated your way around the rink, warm up with a hot drink or treat from food stalls in the George Street warming zone.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party
Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year or New Year’s Eve and is generally regarded as the most important Scottish holiday. Christmas was not celebrated as a festival and virtually banned in Scotland for around 400 years. And so it was, right up until the 1950s that many Scots worked over Christmas and celebrated their winter solstice holiday at New Year, when family and friends would gather for a party and to exchange presents which came to be known as hogmanays.
Highlighted as one of the ‘Top 100 things to do before you die’ and recently the only festival to appear in the ‘Discovery Channel – Top 25 World Travel Experiences’, Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party is one of the world’s greatest New Year celebrations.
